Uber Taxi drivers manifest in Brussels

Dozens of Uber Taxi drivers protested in the Belgian capital on Thursday after the Brussels Court of Appeal ruled that the ride-sharing app violated local law. Under the decision, about 2,000 drivers who use the Uber app will have to stop operating by Friday evening.

"As of 6 p.m. on Friday, November 26, only 5% of cars will be available to move you around Brussels (only drivers with a Flemish taxi license)," Uber told its Brussels customers in an email.

"We are disappointed with the court's decision and deeply concerned for drivers as they will lose their ability to earn through the Uber app beginning Friday," the company continued.

The decision is the latest installment in a long-running legal battle pitting Uber against a traditional taxi company, Taxis Verts. In 2015, the UberPop service, which connected non-professional drivers with customers, was banned in Brussels.

But Uber continued to operate its service with licensed drivers. The Brussels Court of Appeal ruled on Wednesday that the 2015 decision in fact applied to all Uber services.

The Brussels government has supported traditional taxis in the impasse. He is accused of delaying regulations that would recognize the licenses of Uber drivers and other ride-sharing services. You can find out more about this at: euronews.com

Taxis London help alzheimer

The brains of black taxi drivers are different from those of others due to the large amount of navigational knowledge they have to store – and this is helping scientists research the onset of Alzheimer's disease.

To become a skilled driver in an iconic London black cab, you must pass the "Know London" test, which requires memorizing thousands of streets, landmarks and routes in central London.

A requirement since 1865, completing Knowledge typically takes three or four years of hard work.

But researchers now believe that passing the test and using their knowledge for years doesn't just mean London taxi drivers know the fastest way from Buckingham Palace to Tower Bridge.

Studying for the brain of knowledge also stimulates and enlarges the hippocampus, a part of the brain that controls learning and memory, and which shrinks at the onset of Alzheimer's disease.

Taxi cemetery to mini gardens

A mass graveyard for Bangkok's flamboyantly colored taxis left idle and rotting by coronavirus curbs is coming to life with mini vegetable gardens and frog ponds set up to help feed unemployed drivers.

In an open-air car park in the west of the Thai capital, green shoots fueled by monsoon rains grow on the roofs and hoods of rows of pink and orange taxis.

Tiny green-brown frogs croak in the tropical heat on makeshift ponds made from old tires, nestled among some 200 abandoned cars.

The site is owned by Ratchapruk Taxi Garage, which has seen most of its drivers leave Bangkok for their home villages as fares have dried up following lockdown restrictions.

Thailand has imposed strict restrictions to deal with a deadly spike in Covid cases in recent months, including a nighttime curfew.

Tourists, normally a mainstay of Bangkok's taxi business, have been reduced to almost none due to the kingdom's draconian entry rules.

Eggplants, peppers, cucumbers, zucchini and basil grown on cars – as well as frogs – will help feed unemployed drivers and employees.

And if the harvests are good, they plan to sell any surplus in local markets.
